How To Deter or Remove Squirrels In One Easy Lesson

Squirrels Love Attics And House Wiring

Squirrel pictures abound on the Internet. They look cute don’t they?

If you’ve read this blog for a while you’ll remember I had squirrels in the attic in March last year.

I tried to get rid of squirrels using every imaginable type of squirrel deterrent. Take my word for it squirrel deterrents just don’t stop the determined squirrel.

Now you may be wondering what this has to do with a business blog…

The reason is that they spend much of the day wandering around and chewing the lighting wires above my study. Thus disrupting the articles and copy I’m trying to write.

In March I thought I’d discovered the way to squirrel control. Basically to shoot up to the attic bang around, turn the light on and make life hell for a shy retiring gray squirrel.

I thought I’d cracked it when they left through the hole they come through and didn’t return.

Hurrah I thought!

Too soon, new squirrels returned just before Christmas. Probably heard we’d got new Christmas lights and wanted to test the wiring for themselves.

Anyway, I then spent several days looking around the Internet to find the best way to control squirrels.

Obviously not poison because they could wander off and die down a wall cavity and I didn’t fancy doing squirrel nest removal from behind a layer of bricks and plaster.

The squirrel repellant had patently not worked but I thought I’d try it one more time. Same result, they made a new nest right next to it!

In the end I discovered that the real experts recommended trapping squirrels with a, guess what?

A squirrel trap.

So I went out to B&Q and bought one.

The next thing I did was to investigate what sort of squirrel food would attract them into the squirrel trap.

The consensus was peanut butter. So I baited the squirrel trap, but didn’t set the trap door to close to allow the squirrels to investigate and try out the approved squirrel food.

They loved it and it went within a few hours.

So then I re-set the bait and also set the trap. Two days later, voila! One squirrel in the trap.

By the way you’re not allowed to release them far from home – it’s actually illegal. Plus you’d have to drive a long way (more than 50 miles) to be sure that the squirrel would lose its sense of direction. That means there’s no way to get squirrel through squirrel rehab, because they just love attics and they’ll get back to yours as soon as possible.

So the only other way is to kill them – humanely. You can take them to the vets or you can get a proper exterminator to kill them for you. Or you could drown them as I hear they die very quickly.

Just don’t delay as they’re really frightened by being trapped. So the sooner you get them out and put down the better.

The squirrel trap is going back in the attic tomorrow so that I can get the next squirrel and then It’ll be time to block the hole – properly this time.
